Midforms 09 is Coming!

The robotic mirrors of the Heliomatrix with the "perl" structures for other exhibits in the background.
Yesterday I helped setup Midforms 09, a three-day digital media event in Vancouver. There's lots more to do but already I can see how awesome this exhibit is going to be.
One common concern among the volunteers is that people think there's nothing to do in Vancouver because it's so hard find out what's going on. There are interesting events like Midforms and last last weekend's Yaletown Illuminated but the trick is getting wind of them beforehand.
So here's my shout out for Midforms!
Midforms is really two-part. There's the digital media exhibition showing in one area, and at night there'll be music and performances in another.
Night Events
All the night events go from 9pm 'til late at the Great Northern Way Campus. Tickets and information at the Midforms 09 website.
Thursday, March 05 - Mosaic Sounds
On opening night, world-famous world-fusion DJ Nickodemus will be spinning the tables over a backdrop of digital visuals. You'll also see Zimbabwean afro-fusion group, Zimbamoto play traditional tunes complete with an African dance performance by Kesseke Yeo!
Friday, March 06 - Techforms
Techforms is a night of VJ collaboration and an exploration of dance-floor technologies. A live link with the SAT in Montreal will bring us Pink Rubber Lady and VJ jocool. Live in Vancouver we'll see VJ Electrabelle and VJ Brady Marks.
You can also influence the performance by contributing content from your mobile phone.
Saturday, March 07 - Breakforms
Breakforms tackles electronic subgenres, hashing a mix of breaks, electronica, glitch, and hip-hop. With visuals from BentMatter, we'll be hearing the sounds of local and international talent: Soul of Man, Myagi, Neighbour, and Kraig. (Sorry, no time for links.)
Digital Media Exhibit

The ContainR installation feeling more at home among the train cars than at its previous spot on the sidewalk of Vancouver's Central Library branch.
The exhibit itself features about ten different projects. Here are a few highlights:
- The towering kinetic sculptures of Bruce Voyce.
- D-Sign, a gesture-based computer interface that'll remind you of that scene in Minority Report.
- An array of robotic mirrors controlled by a computer to produce images (or start fires) using only reflected light: Heliomatrix.
If those don't get your curiosity, there's a lot more up for show so I recommend you check it out! You can access the exhibit during the night events or you can check it out for free Friday or Saturday between 1:00pm and 4:00pm. Tickets and information at the Midforms 09 website.
